Your Tour Itinerary - Iberian Inspiration

Day 1 Madrid - Toledo

After meeting in Madrid, we begin our journey to Toledo where centuries of history come alive. Afterwards, we sit down to a welcome dinner in a traditional Spanish restaurant. (D

Day 2 Toledo - Valdepenas - Cordoba

Our road continues south across the vast plains of La Mancha, where Cervantes’s Don Quixote jousted with windmills. We pause in Valdepeñas to visit a local bodega for wine and tapas, before continuing on to Córdoba – our home for the next two nights. (B,L)

Day 3 Cordoba

This morning we go back to the days of Islamic Iberia in Córdoba’s old town. Today you’re free to explore at your own pace. Seek out hidden squares and local cafés, pamper yourself at a traditional hammam or simply marvel at the city’s eye-catching architecture. A highlight is the monumental Mezquita – a UNESCO protected mosque. (B)

Day 4 Cordoba - Ubeda - Baeza

Today we pay court to two great women of Andalucía. The towns of Ubeda and Baeza, called ‘Queen’ and ‘Lady’ respectively by poet Antonio Machado, are replete with spectacular Renaissance palaces. This morning we pause to taste Spanish olive oil at its source in a peaceful olive grove, before settling into our hotel. Dinner tonight is a group affair. (B,D)

Day 5 Baeza - Haeb - Granada

Our first stop today is Jaen Cathedral, with its towers set against a backdrop of rolling hills. After free time, we continue on to Granada. With two nights here, we have plenty of time to unravel its secrets. (B)

Day 6 Granada

Intricately carved archways. Lavish interiors featuring colourful tiles. Vibrant gardens. The Alhambra, a breathtaking Moorish palace perched on a hilltop outside Granada, must be seen to be believed. Afternoon finds us back in the city centre, where you’re free to discover the city – just be sure to take in the stunning cathedral. (B)

Day 7 Granada - Ronda

From Granada our path turns east, passing through rural countryside to Ronda. With a dramatic setting on the edge of a deep canyon, this historic town boasts breathtaking views. (B)

Day 8 Ronda - Jerez - Arcos - Grazalema - Sevlle

Today we drive to Jerez to visit a local winery with a private gallery followed by a tapas lunch and wine tasting. Later, we visit Seville where tonight we enjoy a traditional flamenco show. (B)

Day 9 Seville

After breakfast, it’s time to explore Seville at your own leisure. You could search out Roman ruins, Moorish mosaics and classical squares. Or take yourself on a tapas tour, hopping from bar to bar, sampling Andalucían specialities in each. (B)

Day 10 Seville - Sierra de Aracena - Estremoz

The city rooftops disappear as we head into the great outdoors. Our first stop is at Gruta de las Maravillas, a cave in the town center of Aracena, before we drive to Ibéricos, a pig farm in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche National Park. After working up an appetite, we sample the famous Jamón Ibérico, before making a visit to Castle Vila Vicosa. We continue to Estremoz to end the day. (B,D)

Day 11 Estremoz - Evora - Lisbon

We set our sights for Portugal today, first travelling to Vila Viçosa and then on to Evora before our road winds into Lisbon where we say farewell. (B)

Why Back-Roads Touring?

Mini-Coaches

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Boutique Hotels

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
