Your Tour Itinerary - Heart of England

Day 1 London – Oxford – Cotswolds

After meeting with the group in London, we’ll move on to our first stop: Oxford. Here, we’ll take a step back in time and discover the poets, professors, scientists and sporting heroes that have graced the streets of this historic city. Next, we’ll venture through quintessential English countryside to meet with the Cotswolds. This charming area is a patchwork of green hills and farmland, peppered with centuries-old villages and caramel-hued cottages. Tonight, we’ll end the day with a delicious welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2 Cotswolds – Stratford-upon-Avon – Cotswolds

The life and times of William Shakespeare will take centre stage in riverside Stratford-upon-Avon today. Here, we’ll see the playwright’s timbered childhood home and his wife Anne Hathaway’s pretty thatched cottage (a stroll through the blooming gardens here is a must). There will even be time to explore some more Cotswold hamlets as we wind our way back to our hotel, where you can enjoy the evening at your leisure. (B)

Day 3 Cotswolds – Lacock – Bath

Day three promises to be an indulgent one, with an afternoon of high tea on the agenda before we move on
to Lacock, a showstopper of a village that often doubles as a film set. After imagining ourselves as costume
drama heroes and heroines, we’ll step inside the magnificent abbey – whose peaceful cloisters took a starring
turn as the Hogwarts hallways in the Harry Potter series. Today we’ll finish in Bath, a UNESCO World Heritagelisted city with true ‘wow’ factor, where we’ll make ourselves at home for our final two nights. (B)

Day 4 Bath

Every beautifully preserved building we’ll see in Bath tells a story. After a morning walking tour, we’ll get a
fascinating insight into Roman life with a visit to the breathtaking Roman Baths. After that, the afternoon is yours to explore the town for yourself. You could enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ at Thermae Bath Spa (Britain’s only thermal spa), where you can bathe in mineral-rich waters while scanning the skyline from the rooftop pool – or, if you’d prefer to explore on foot, you could discover Bath’s proud independent side and wander past stylish boutiques and celebrated coffee shops. At our last dinner together, we’ll swap stories and look back on our English journey with fond memories. (B,D)

Day 5 Bath – Longleat – Avebury – London

The perfect way to follow up a day in Bath is with a morning at Longleat. This English stately home, the current seat of the Marquess of Bath, blends classic architecture with creative interiors. After we’ve had a look around, our journey will continue to Avebury, an immense stone circle set within an ancient landscape of enigmatic monuments, tombs and roads that were first walked millennia ago. While Stonehenge attracts tourists from around the world and does not permit close access, at Avebury we’ll have the opportunity to walk freely among the standing stones. Steeped in mystery, these prehistoric stone circles are a fascinating sight – and make for a tremendous final stop. Afterwards, we’ll return to the bright lights of London, where we’ll say our goodbyes. (B)

This tour can be combined with Corners of Cornwall, The Wonders of Wales and/or The Emerald Isle.

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
