Your Tour Itinerary - London to Paris via the Channel Islands

Day 1 London – Winchester – Dorset

After meeting the group in London we’ll travel to Winchester, where a tour of the cathedral awaits. Then, it’s onwards to the sublime Isle of Purbeck via Corfe Castle. Later, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner together in Dorset. (D)

Day 2 Dorset – Guernsey

This morning it’ll be all aboard the ferry to Guernsey. At St Peter Port, you can enjoy some free time to roam at your leisure before we meet to explore the grand Sausmarez Manor. Here, we’ll be treated to a private tour of the house and gardens. (B)

Day 3 Guernsey - Sark - Guernsey

This morning we’ll move on to Sark, where the day will be yours to spend as you please. After returning to Guernsey on the ferry, we’ll settle down for an included dinner together. (B,D)

Day 4 Guernsey

First on the agenda today: a stop at the enchanting Little Chapel, which was built entirely from seashells. Afterwards, we’ll visit the German Occupation Museum and enjoy some free time. (B)

Day 5 Guernsey – Jersey

Our morning in Guernsey will be a relaxed one as we ready ourselves to depart for our next island adventure in Jersey. When we get there, we’ll get acquainted with St Aubin before returning to Jersey for dinner. (B,D)

Day 6 Jersey

At La Hougue Bie we’ll discover one of Western Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic sites. Then, we’ll press onwards to Mont Orgueil Castle, which has stood watch over Jersey for over 600 years, before returning to our hotel for the evening. (B)

Day 7 Jersey – St Malo

Walter Raleigh’s stronghold and Charles II’s refuge, Elizabeth Castle has played a huge role in Jersey’s history. Today we’ll see its wartime bunkers and the causeway that permits entrance at low tide. Later, we’ll swap Britain for France and sail to the old walled city of Saint-Malo. (B)

Day 8 St Malo

St Malo’s labyrinthine streets are best explored on foot – and that’s how we’ll begin today. Later, we’ll visit the impressive Château de Saint- Malo, which houses the town museum in its keep. (B)

Day 9 St Malo – Mont St Michel – Dinan – St Malo

Today we’ll wind our way along the coast of Normandy to the magical Mont Saint-Michel, a rocky islet topped with a medieval monastery. Afterwards, we’ll explore Dinan by ourselves before coming back together for a taste of classic French cuisine in Saint-Malo. (B,D)

Day 10 St Malo – Fougères – Sainte Suzanne – Laval

Château de Fougères captivates at first sight. We’ll learn about its ups and downs this morning before moving on to Sainte-Suzanne. Before we rest our heads in Laval, we’ll indulge in a delicious farewell group dinner. (B,D)

Day 11 Laval – Chartres – Paris

We’ll end our tour with a trip to the Cathedral of Chartres – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a beautifully preserved example of Gothic architecture. Our final stop will be Paris. (B)

This tour can be combined with Corners of Cornwal and/or Historic Eastern England.

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
