Your Tour Itinerary - A Scottish Journey

Day 1 Edinburgh – St Andrews – Ballater

Old seafaring villages, mysterious ruins and a royal love story will welcome us to Scotland. We’ll begin by travelling past towering mountains and East Neuk fishing villages before arriving in St Andrews, a tiny town with a big reputation for world-class golf. Our day will end with a delicious welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2 Ballater - Cairngorms National Park - Culloden - Inverness

Our day will begin in dramatic fashion as we travel through the awe-inspiring scenery of Cairngorms National Park on the way to the historic tombs of Clava Cairns. After exploring the Visitor Centre at the Culloden Battlefield, our final stop of the day will be Inverness, the heart of the Highlands. (B,D)

Day 3 Inverness

This morning, we’ll embark on a walking tour of Inverness. Then, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. (B

Day 4 Inverness – Loch Ness – Plockton – Isle of Skye

First today: a short stop at Loch Ness. Our pre-lunch entertainment will come in the form of a visit to
Plockton, where painted cottages cluster around a little harbour. With our appetites for the outdoors
whetted, we’ll sit down to a seafood lunch. Today’s final drive is to the Isle of Skye, where we’ll stay for two
nights. (B,L)

Day 5 Isle of Skye

Sensational landscapes, rare wildlife and imagination-firing history – the Isle of Skye delivers on every level.
This is North Highland scenery on a grand scale! While here, we’ll immerse ourselves in the island’s unique
geology, including the extraordinary Quiraing, Kilt Rock and Old Man of Storr. (B,D)

Day 6 Isle of Skye – Fort William – Isle of Mull

Continuing our journey through soul-stirring Scottish scenery, we’ll pass Fort William – a magnet for outdoor
enthusiasts. Next, there’s a short ferry ride over to the Isle of Mull. (B)

Day 7 Isle of Mull - Isle of Iona - Isle of Mull

The best way to see the Hebrides is by island hopping. Today, we’ll do just that. From Mull’s little village
of Fionnphort, we’ll set sail to Iona, where we’ll wander to Iona Abbey and Nunnery. When we return to
Mull, we’ll pop our history hats on and peek inside Duart Castle, which offers grand staterooms and empty
dungeons. This craggy fortress, clinging to a coastal cliff, is the oldest inhabited castle on the island. Later,
we’ll return to our hotel to share a final group dinner together. (B,D)

Day 8 Isle of Mull – Stirling – Edinburgh

Taking to the sea once again, we’ll return to the mainland. It’s been a tour that’s delved deep into Scotland’s
heritage, so it’s only right that we finish with a stop in Stirling. A drive through the Old Town will bring us
to the magnificent hilltop castle. As one of Scotland’s most impressive and important monuments, it’s the perfect way to round off our tour before we make our way back to Edinburgh. (B)

This tour can be combined with Battle of Britain, Corners of Southern Ireland and/or The Emerald Isle.

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
