Day 1 Madrid - Toledo

After meeting in Madrid, we’ll begin our journey to Toledo, where centuries of history come alive. After a city tour, we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at our hotel’s restaurant, which specialises in suckling pig and lamb. (D)

Day 2 Toledo - Valdepenas - Cordoba

Our road continues south across the vast plains of La Mancha. We’ll pause in Valdepeñas to visit a local bodega for wine and tapas before continuing on to Córdoba – our home for the next two nights. (B,L)

Day 3 Cordoba

After a city tour of Córdoba’s Old Town with an included entrance to the Mezquita (a UNESCO-protected mosque), you’ll be free to explore at your own pace. Seek out hidden squares and local cafés, pamper
yourself at a traditional hammam or simply marvel at the city’s eye-catching architecture. (B)

Day 4 Cordoba - Ubeda - Baeza

After pausing to taste Spanish olive oil in a peaceful olive grove, we’ll check out the town of Úbeda, which is full of spectacular Renaissance palaces. Then it’s onward to our hotel in Granada. (B)

Day 5 Granada

Intricately carved archways. Lavish interiors featuring colourful tiles. Vibrant gardens. Today we’ll pay a visit to the Alhambra, a breath-taking Moorish palace perched on a hilltop outside Granada. This afternoon will find us back in the city centre, where you’ll be free to discover the city. (B)

Day 6 Granada - Ronda

From Granada, our path turns east to Ronda, a historic town with breath-taking views. Tonight, we’ll join together for a group dinner in a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 7 Ronda - Grazalema - Arcos - Jerez - Seville

Today, we’ll drive to Jerez to visit a local winery with a private gallery before enjoying a tapas lunch and wine tasting. Later, we’ll move on to Seville, where we’ll enjoy a traditional flamenco show. (B,L)

Day 8 Sevlle

After breakfast, it’s time to explore Seville at your own leisure. You could search out Roman ruins, Moorish mosaics and classical squares, or you could hop from bar to bar while sampling Andalucían specialities. (B)

Day 9 Seville - Sierra De Aracena

It’s back to nature today as we make tracks to the Sierra de Aracena, a mountain range peppered with castles, quaint villages and pastures. With a variety of well-maintained trails, the area certainly deserves its status as a fantastic place for a ramble. (B)

Day 10 Sierra de Aracena - Monsaraz - Estremoz

Our first stop of the day is Monsaraz, a charming Portuguese hilltop village with sweeping views of the Alqueva Dam. We’ll take some time to stroll its narrow streets before moving on to Estremoz to end the day. (B, D)

Day 11 Estremoz - Evora - Lisbon

Today we’ll continue to Évora, the capital of the Alentejo region. After taking a look around the marvellous cathedral, the Templo Romano and the town square, we’ll press on to Lisbon, where we’ll say farewell.

This tour can be combined with Discover Portugal, Majestic Morocco and/or Italian Indulgence.

Why Back-Roads Touring?

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
