Your Tour Itinerary - Provence and The French Riviera

Day 1 Nice - Antibes - Vence - Alpes Maritimes

Our first stop today will be Antibes, where we’ll take a look around the old port. Then we’ll journey through Saint-Paul-de-Vence – one of the older medieval towns of the area. We’ll round off the day with a guided tour of the light-filled Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, a chapel which was built from a plan created by the
legendary Henri Matisse. (D)

Day 2 Alpes Maritimes - Grasse - Aix-en-Provence

Nestled in the hills north of Cannes, Grasse is where world-class perfumes are created. So, it’s only right that we’ll make a stop at the Fragonard Museum, where we’ll treat our senses to some beautiful fragrances. Then, it’s on to Aix-en-Provence. (B)

Day 3 Aix-en-Provence - Arles

On day three, you’ll get the chance to spend the morning at leisure in Aix-en- Provence. Then, after stopping in some classic Provençal villages and towns, we’ll move on to Arles – known for inspiring Van Gogh’s paintings. (B,D)

Day 4  Arles

Today will be yours for the taking. Seize the opportunity to uncover thousands of years of history and culture. Highlights in Arles include the Arles Amphitheatre, the Church of St Trophime, the Langlois Bridge and the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. (B)

Day 5 Arles - Baux-de-Provence - Saint-Remy-de-Provence

First today, we’ll make stops at the medieval Les Baux-de-Provence and a local olive farm (olive oil tasting ncluded). Then we’ll make tracks to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where we’ll visit the impressive Saint Paul de Mausole Monastery. Vincent van Gogh lived here from May 1889 to May 1890 – and you’ll get the chance to visit a reconstruction of the artist’s room. In the Van Gogh Field, there’s also the opportunity to see 20 largescale reproductions of the painter’s work. (B,L)

Day 6 Saint-Remy-de-Provence - Pont du Gard - Avignon - Saint-Remy-de-Provence

Roman engineering. Catholic architecture. It must mean we’re en route to Avignon! On our journey, we’ll pay a visit to the iconic Pont du Gard. Then, it’s onwards to Avignon where we’ll visit the Palace of the Popes, which towers over the historic centre. Among all of the exploring, there’ll also be time for a wine tasting today. (B,D)

Day 7 Saint-Remy-de-Provence - Gorges Du Verdon

First today, we’ll visit Sénanque Abbey and the l’Occitane-en-Provence factory in Manosque. Then, we’ll move on to the sensational Gorges du Verdon – for many, the jewel in this region’s crown. It’s so spectacular that we’ll stay for two nights in the area. (B)

Day 8 Gorges du Verdon

The steep cliff sides, white-water rapids and turquoise-coloured water of the Gorges du Verdon make for an incredible sight. Tonight, we’ll settle down to a final dinner together. (B,D)

Day 9 Gorges du Verdon - Castellane - Nice

Our tour’s last stop will see us in the cobbles of Castellane. Look out for the dazzlingly high Chapelle Notre Dame du Roc. After, we’ll return to Nice where we’ll say goodbye to the group. (B)

This tour can be combined with Highlights of Northern Spain and/or La Belle France.

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
