Your Tour Itinerary - Orkney and The Highlands

Day 1 Inverness - Strathpeffer - Orkney

Our journey through the misty crags and heather clad moors of Scotland will begin in Inverness today. After meeting with the group, we’ll take in staggering vistas of soaring peaks and wide valleys as our road takes us north. Our first stop of the day will be Strathpeffer – a stylish Victorian spa town, where we’ll have some free time to explore. Afterwards, we’ll leave land behind and sail to Orkney on a short ferry journey, complete with plenty of scenic views. Kirkwall, first settled by the Vikings, will be our home for the next two nights. (B)

Day 2 Orkney

Majestic landscapes, scenic roads and an imagination-firing history – Orkney delivers on every level. Today we’ll walk in the footsteps of ancient islanders at the mysterious Maeshowe tomb, the Neolithic village of Skara Brae and the mystical Ring of Brodgar, taking in the history and significance of each site as we go. Our next stop will be the Iron Age Broch of Gurness – and, if the tides are on our side, an atmospheric walk to Brough of Birsay island. (B,D)

Day 3 Orkney - Wick

From the St Magnus Cathedral to the Bishop’s Palace, there are plenty of Norse sites on our doorstep in Kirkwall. The afternoon will take us to Scapa Flow, where we’ll see the famous Italian Chapel and stop for a photo opportunity at the WWII shipwrecks. To round off the day, we’ll board the ferry to the mainland, where we’ll reminisce on our tour and enjoy a farewell dinner in Wick. (B,D)

Day 4 Wick - Dunrobin Castle - Inverness

After one final breakfast together we’ll continue our journey back to Inverness. It’s been a tour that’s delved deep into Scotland’s heritage, so it’s only fitting that we finish with a stop at the historic Dunrobin Castle. We’ll take some time to explore the impressive white towers and formal gardens of this stately home before boarding the mini-coach and travelling the meandering coastal road over the Dornoch and Cromarty Firths. Don’t forget to focus your camera lens on the soul-stirring Scottish scenery as we go! When we reach Inverness, we’ll say our goodbyes as the tour comes to a close. (B)

This tour can be combined with Battle of Britain, Corners of Southern Ireland and/or The Emerald Isle.

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

Mini-Coaches

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
