The Settle to Carlisle Railway (full day)
Our memorable journey on the world-famous Settle to Carlisle Railway might well be the highlight of our break. Arguably the most scenic line in the country, it took 6,000 men seven years to build. The line cuts a 72-mile swathe across the Yorkshire Dales, over the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct, through the long tunnel at Blea Moor and on past the lush pastures of the Eden Valley before arriving in Carlisle, where we enjoy some free time at leisure.
The Lake District (full day)
We head into the Lake District, stopping first at the town of Kendal, the southern gateway to the lakes and home of the famous Kendal mint cake. We then head to Bowness-on-Windermere, a charming enclave on the banks of Lake Windermere. This bustling town offers lovely panoramic views of the lake plus plenty of craft and gift shops, lakeside cafés and tea rooms.
Chequers Plaza Hotel
The Chequers Plaza Hotel is located on Blackpool’s Queen’s Promenade with panoramic views of the Irish Sea. The hotel is set on a tranquil part of the seafront, yet the bustling centre of Blackpool is just a short tram ride away, with the tram stops located opposite the hotel.
