Holiday Itinerary

Sunday:

From local joining points we make our way to our overnight stop.

Monday:

We take the early morning ferry from Holyhead to Dublin before making our way to Roscommon and the Abbey Hotel for five nights.

Tuesday:

A day at leisure to discover the local delights of this friendly market town.

Wednesday:

Today we head to the famous city of Galway, a wonderful mix of colour, culture and character, of twisting lanes a uniquely shaped cathedral and impressive Spanish arch, all captivating the charm of Ireland.

Thursday:

This morning we visit Strokestown Park House and the National Famine Museum. Strokestown was home to the first landlord to be assassinated during the height of the Great Famine of Ireland in 1847. Today the house is a time capsule, unchanged from 19th century and the museum narrates one of the most destructive episodes in Ireland’s history. We continue to the riverside town of Carrickon-Shannon, steeped in history at the gateway to Ireland’s Lakelands.

Friday:

This morning we take the Irish rail network and head to the pretty resort of Westport on the wild Atlantic coast. From here we re-join our coach and skirt Killary Harbour – Ireland’s only fjord – and the grounds of Kylemore Abbey as we pass through the remote, yet wonderful
Connemara National Park.

Saturday:

This morning we leave Roscommon and make our way into Dublin for some free time before we board the afternoon ferry to Holyhead and onward to our overnight hotel.

Sunday:

Our tour comes to a close as we return home.

Abbey Hotel

This family run hotel, taking its name from the Abbey ruins located beside it, is situated in the centre of Roscommon, based around an 18th Century manor house with wonderful private lawns and gardens.

Visiting Ireland is an unforgettable experience. Here the lush rolling emeraldlandscape with its enchanting towns and villages reveals a country rich in ancient  myths and legends; a place where the wit and charm of its people is as precious as the land itself. The lesser-known county of Roscommon, is often described as ‘the heart of undiscovered Ireland’. It is landlocked between Dublin and Galway, with the Irish Lakelands to the north, and is perfectly placed for touring the Emerald Isle. The county town of Roscommon, our holiday base, was once an important farming centre and is home to a 13th century castle and abbey which is situated next to our hotel.
