Your Tour Itinerary - The Wonders of Wales

Day 1 Cardiff – Brecon Beacons

After meeting the group in Cardiff this morning, we’ll set off in search of the Wales of old. Our first stop will be the National History Museum of Wales in St Fagans. Then it’s on to Caerleon, where we’ll explore the fascinating Roman Fortress and Baths. When we’ve had a look around, we’ll journey onwards through the dramatic Welsh Valleys. After a day of taking in some remarkable scenery we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at Brecon Beacons National Park, our beautiful base for the next two nights. (D)

Day 2 Brecon Beacons – Wye Valley – Brecon Beacons

Centuries of history have left their mark on the Brecon Beacons’ remarkable landscape. First today, we’ll visit the Big Pit National Coal Museum before travelling through the spellbinding Wye Valley en route to our next stop: the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Tintern Abbey. After a wine-tasting session at an award-winning vineyard, we’ll return to our hotel for an evening of leisure. (B)

Day 3 Brecon Beacons – Llangollen - Conwy

Today our journey will take us further north along the border regions of Mid Wales to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the longest and highest structure of its kind and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After enjoying an  afternoon tea together we’ll move onto our Conwy hotel, where we’ll stay for the next three nights. (B)

Day 4 Conwy

After an eventful few days, today you’ll have plenty of free time to explore Conwy. This afternoon, we’ll be in for a traditional Welsh cultural treat: a soul-stirring male voice choir performance. (B)

Day 5 Conwy – Caernarfon Castle – Nant Gwrtheyrn – Conwy

We’ll turn west today, setting a course for Llanberis Slate Mine and Caernarfon Castle – once a royal palace built for Edward I. We’ll then head to the fascinating Welsh Language Heritage Centre, Nant Gwrtheyrn, which is located in a former quarrying village. Here, we’ll flex our language skills with a lesson in tongue-twisting Welsh pronunciation. There will be plenty of time to practise your new-found skills at dinner tonight! (B,D)

Day 6 Conwy – Devil's Bridge - Tregaron

First today, we’ll be whisked away to the home of famous Welsh poet Hedd Wyn. Then, it’s onwards to the Devil’s Bridge – a world famous attraction home to stunning waterfalls and a steam train experience. Dinner is in Tregaron tonight. (B,D)

Day 7 Tregaron - Pembrokeshire

First today: a visit to a Welsh gold centre, a stop at the Cenarth Coracle Centre and an exploration of the
majestic Castell Henllys. Then, we’ll continue to Pembrokeshire, where our lodgings come in the form of an elegant country estate. Here, we’ll don our best outfits and meet for one last dinner together. (B,D)

Day 8 Pembrokeshire - St David's Head - Cardiff

We’ll finish our adventure by travelling along the west coast, visiting the coastal town of St
David’s Head before we return to Cardiff. (B)

Why Back-Roads Touring

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

Mini-Coaches

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
