Your Tour Itinerary - WWI Battlefields

Day 1 Lille

Today we’ll meet with the group in Lille and enjoy an included welcome dinner together. Over the following
days, we’ll visit the principal areas of British, Commonwealth (Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, South African and Indian) and American involvement across the Western Front. With a unique opportunity to see the memorials to each country’s fallen, this guided tour will offer an unforgettable experience to those wishing to gain a greater understanding of WWI. (D)

Day 2 Lille - The Somme - Amiens

We’ll commence our first day by exploring the region of the Somme, which is infamous for the great losses suffered on the first day of battle, 1 July 1916. We’ll make stops at Newfoundland Memorial Park, where the original trench lines have been preserved, the Ulster Tower and the Pozières Cemetery. Afterwards, we’ll complete our day at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme before heading to Amiens for our overnight stay. After an insightful and history-filled day, you’ll be free to rest easy and enjoy time at your own leisure. (B)

Day 3 Amiens - Villers - Bretonneux - Ypres

Today we’ll leave Amiens and travel to the Australian National War Memorial and Cemetery at Villers-Bretonneux. Later, we’ll take time to visit the Canadian Memorial Park on Vimy Ridge before we reach Ypres. (B,D)

Day 4 Ypres - Ypres Salient - Menin Gate - Ypres

The beautiful city of Ypres was totally destroyed during the war, and sits in the epicentre of British endeavours during four long years of conflict. There is much to see around Ypres, including John McCrae’s Dressing Station at Essex Farm Cemetery, the German Cemetery at Langemark, Vancouver Corner and the Hooge Crater trenches museum. As a fitting end to the day, you’ll be invited to attend the daily playing of the Last Post under the Menin Gate Memorial. (B)

DAY 5 Ypres – Fromelles – Lille

We’ll spend today exploring Hill 60 and the area around Fromelles, VC Corner and the Australian Memorial
Park. We’ll also visit the recent exhibition commemorating the finding of 250 previously unknown sets of remains in 2009 (and their now marked burial place) at Pheasant Wood Cemetery. Later, our tour will end in Lille, where we’ll say farewell to the group. (B)

This tour can be combined with La Belle France and/ or ANZACs on the Western Front.

Why Back Roads Touring?

Smaller groups of up to 18

With a maximum group size of 18 people on Europe tours (22 on French barge tours) and 14 people on Asia tours, Back Roads pride themselves on ensuring that each guest has a personalised holiday experience.

On the vast majority of tours we travel by Mercedes or Mercedes Vito mini-coaches, equipped with comfortable seats, air-conditioning and large windows for enjoying the view. With the flexibility to go anywhere a car can, we take the smaller roads through beautiful scenery and get right to the heart of tiny villages and buzzing cities.
Along the way, your Tour Leader can offer intriguing insights about the views we see over the onboard PA system. And, with long drives kept to a minimum, you’ll have plenty of time to stretch your legs and explore sites for yourself.

Scenic back roads not motorways

Winding country lanes. Coastal beauty spots. Breathtaking mountain passes. With luxury mini-coaches that take us along scenic roads beyond the reach of large vehicles, the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.

Authentic Local Experiences

Truly getting to know a destination means stepping off the typical tourist trail. From hidden-gem attractions to local favourites, we take time to seek out genuine experiences that take you to the heart of each spectacular region.

Culinary Discoveries

One of the most enjoyable ways to experience a different culture is to sample the cuisine. From visits to local producers to food and wine tastings and even cooking lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to discover new flavours.

Hand Picked Boutique Accommodation

Whether it’s a classic country inn or an elegant chateau, each day’s journey ends in a hotel with plenty of character. We opt for accommodation that reflects the personality of the local area, and fits right in with its surroundings.

Leisurely Paced Travel

Forget sunrise starts and long days hopping on and off the bus. We rarely leave before 8.30am and give each stop the attention it deserves – keeping long drives to a minimum. And giving you plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
