The Play

To maintain the tradition of the solemn vow the villagers made in 1633, everyone taking part in the play must have been born in Oberammergau and the surrounding villages, or must have lived in the village for at least 20 years. At times, the stage also holds small herds of sheep and goats, donkeys, a horse and armoured Roman soldiers.

From Ash Wednesday, 2019, all of the performers let their hair grow – the men also let their beards grow – so that they have an authentic biblical appearance.

Altogether, there will be more than 2000 Oberammergau villagers taking part in this world-famous play in 2020. The play is traditionally performed in German and a textbook with the complete play text is included on all tours. The play starts at 2.30pm* with a break at 5pm when you can enjoy an included dinner. The second part of the play runs from 8pm to 10.30pm, after which you will be transferred back to your accommodation.

Oberammergau tickets

Tickets for the 2020 Passion Play are only available as part of an official package and are allocated along with the hotel. Whilst Leger can't advise on the exact location of the seats, as a general rule, the higher the grade of accommodation, the better the seats.

Originally performed in 1634 on a simple wooden stage in the village cemetery, above the graves of recent victims of the Black Death, the stage was moved in the early 19th century to the theatre’s current location. The play now takes place in Oberammergau’s large, purpose built theatre.

At one end, the stage is open, with excellent mountain views beyond. The auditorium itself is under cover and seats almost 5000 people, with the comfortable seats set on an incline, providing everyone with a good view.
