There are also beautifully-preserved ramparts, old alleyways, mansion-lined streets, lively squares and the famous Pont d'Avignon to explore.
This evening we check into the ibis Styles Toulon Centre, our base for the next five nights.

Day 5 - Marseille
Our first stop of the day is the oldest city in France, Marseille, where its rich history spans the centuries. From the bustling Vieux Port, where fishermen sell their catch along the boat-lined quay, to the historic Le Panier neighbourhood with its narrow, winding streets and colourful markets, Marseille is a breathtaking city, full of culture and tradition. Highlights include the stunning views from Notre-Dame de la Garde, also known as La Bonne Mère. This grand basilica sits atop La Garde Hill, the highest point in the city, and is a truly iconic symbol of Marseille. We discover more with our local guide.
Afterwards, we spend a relaxing Boxing Day afternoon back at the hotel, with films, games and quizzes.
Day 6 – Aix-en-Provence
We enjoy a guided walking tour of Aix-en-Provence, known as the City of a Thousand Fountains. Nestled in the heart of Provence, this historic city is famed for its thermal hot springs and picturesque Old Town. There's plenty of sights to see before stopping for lunch (not included) and time at leisure. Stroll through the bustling markets, admire the elegant fountains and immerse yourself in the quintessential Provençal way of life in the charming cafés.
Day 7 - Lyon
After checking out of the hotel, we make our way to Lyon, the perfect lunch stop thanks to its reputation as the gourmet capital of France! Situated where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet, this impressive city takes us on a journey through time. Its Old Town – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – offers a maze of narrow streets, vaulted passageways and historic buildings. Another highlight is the Notre Dame de Fourvière, a late 19th-century basilica built in shimmering white stone. We continue to our overnight hotel in Dijon, where we enjoy a light evening meal.
Day 8 – Return home
Continue on to Calais for our return ferry home.
